@reinpost Passion and talent do not excuse arrogance and rudeness - nothing does. I've known plenty of engineers - some of of whom where responsible for motivating others to write code - who managed to do a fine job without acting like this. Also, I did not take his remarks as personal insults. That would be pretty difficult since he never once mentions me by name, or even by implication. Taking them personally would be exactly the sort of unprofessional behavior I'm talking about.

@rdormer Passion for doing difficult things right, and strong opinions are just a reflection of that, motivate people like Torvalds to write software in the first place. If you can't share that, you can't motivate people to write software. Taking his remarks as personal insults means you have the wrong kind of brain and should seek a career elsewhere.

51:16 "Let's go back to one of the things where I think the designers of Subversion were complete morons. Strong opinions - that's me. There are a few of them in the room today, I suspect. You're stupid! ... It is incredible how stupid these people are. They've been looking at the wrong problem all the time. Branching is not the issue - merging is. And merging they didn't do squat for, five years after the fact. That is sad!"

@charlieSharpsteen I never said anyone has to sugar coat anything. However, this sort of divisive, over the top rhetoric is un-necessary. Just because you disagree with the way something is done, does not give you an excuse to be rude. Judging by the reactions of many in the open source community, I'm far from alone in feeling that way. The software industry already has an image problem - this attitude doesn't help. |
